The first demonstration of laser action in ruby was made in 1960 by T. H. Maiman of Hughes Research Laboratories, USA. Many laboratories worldwide began the search for lasers using different materials, operating at different wavelengths. In the UK, academia, industry and the central laboratories took up the challenge from the earliest days to develop these systems for a broad range of applications. This historical review looks at the contribution the UK has made to the advancement of the technology, the development of systems and components and their exploitation over the last 60 years.

Background
Few studies have examined the impact of stimulant use on outcome in early psychosis. Ceasing substance use may lead to positive outcomes in psychosis.
AimsTo examine whether baseline cannabis or stimulant disorders and ongoing drug use predict readmission within 2 years of a first psychosis admission.
MethodPredictors of readmission were examined with Cox regression in 7269 people aged 15–29 years with a first psychosis admission.
ResultsBaseline cannabis and stimulant disorders did not predict readmission. A stimulant disorder diagnosis prior to index psychosis admission predicted readmission, but a prior cannabis disorder diagnosis did not. Ongoing problem drug use predicted readmission. The lowest rate of readmission occurred in people whose baseline drug problems were discontinued.
ConclusionsPrior admissions with stimulant disorder may be a negative prognostic sign in first-episode psychosis. Drug use diagnoses at baseline may be a good prognostic sign if they are identified and controlled.

Metabolism of 2,4-D by Cotton and Grain Sorghum

Foliar absorption of 2,4-D-C14 was rapid in both species. Cotton decarboxylated the side chain of 2,4-D several times faster than sorghum. Both species released C14O2 faster from the carboxyl than from the methylene position. Cotton slowly converted 2,4-D to a chromatographically different material in young leaves and bolls. Sorghum rapidly converted 2,4-D to a product different from 2,4-D and the 2,4-D-complex in cotton. After cotton recovered from 2,4-D-treatment, the regulator could not be detected in subsequent vegetative or reproductive growth.

The compound 3-amino-1, 2,4-triazole (ATA) is water soluble, heterocyclic and will react with most acids and bases to form salts. Several workers have reported that ATA is a promising herbicide for the control of a number of weed species. ATA was first noted to have defoliating and regrowth-inhibiting properties on cotton in tests conducted by workers of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station in 1952. The compound was found to increase the effectiveness of many commercial defoliants while adding the property of regrowth inhibition. During 1954 and 1955, a number of tests were conducted with various salts and derivatives of ATA in the hope that they would be more effective at lower rates as cotton defoliants and regrowth inhibitors. The present paper compares the performance of ATA with eight of its salts or derivatives which were found to be the most successful in defoliating cotton and controlling regrowth after preliminary screening in the greenhouse.
